YACHT BUILDER BOOSTS CRANE FLEET TO 30 Despite international competition luxury craft builders Princess Yachts of Plymouth continue to expand. Work is underway on a major redevelopment programme at their Newport Street facility. The main contractor Dean and Dyball Construction of Exeter have placed an order with Street Crane Company to produce 10 new overhead cranes. With this latest order, the number of Street cranes in use by Princess will now exceed thirty, across four manufacturing sites. Princess Yachts, one of the largest producers of luxury yachts in the world, produce craft of 10 to 25 metres ranging in value from £200,000 to £2million. The company has gained an enviable reputation for quality through significant investment in the latest CAD/CAM design and manufacturing technology. Eight of the new cranes are single girder units of 6.3 tonnes safe working load, with underslung hoists and dual speed control on all motions. The package is completed by two cranes of 25 tonnes each having twin hoists of 12.5 tonnes allowing independent or tandem use for flexibility. All cranes will be radio controlled. Hulls, bulkheads, decks and superstructure are fabricated from GRP. Street cranes are employed in every phase of the manufacturing process; moving moulds from store to the laying up area, moving fabrications and fittings into the build area, in assembly of the craft and moving finished boats from final inspection into the water. Princess Yachts have grown consistently since their foundation 30 years ago. With a workforce of nearly 1400 and a turnover of over £100 million they are one of the largest yacht builders in Europe. With the completion of the Newport Street development later this year another chapter in their growth will begin.
