Corrugated Paper Packaging Experts Smurfit-Kappa Implement New QIS Quality System at Townsend Hook Mill

QiSOFT has completed the installation of its Quality Information Software, QISv6 at Smurfit-Kappa’s Townsend Hook Mill in Kent, UK. The project was driven by the need to replace an outdated system and an increasing need for connectivity, real time information and reporting of performance data to support the efficient running of the mill.

Smurfit-Kappa’s project team led by Swapan Bhattacharjee, product development engineer, reporting to Geoff Brooks, operations director, drew up a full set of requirements and was responsible for commissioning the software.

QISv6 is a high performance, distributed information management system which provides a ‘single window’ view of operational data from a variety of data sources. It was selected for its functionality, customer support and the backing provided by QiSOFT, who have extensive knowledge of the paper industry. The SQL-based database application is deployed at Townsend Hook via Citrix Terminal Server and has been installed in the production, technical and laboratory areas of the mill.

Recently the number of licensed users of the QISv6 system was increased by five. This allows more supervisors to access the program for greater visibility of the quality and performance data for more efficient production.

Full training was given to operators and the existing quality control database converted into QIS. To provide a clear ‘information picture’ across the mill, interfaces were setup using the QIS ProcessLink to connect with the L&W Autoline 400 paper testing system and Oracle-based business systems.
