Tin Man Finds New Home at Alder Hey Children's Hospital

The children’s hospital at Alder Hey has a new member of staff. A life size Tin Man has been installed close to the main entrance that will hopefully delight visiting children of all ages. The sculpture is a gift from ventilation ductwork manufacturer Senior Hargreaves. To mark the Hargreaves Ductshops trade counter opening in Liverpool in 2005, the company was a sponsor of the hospital’s Imagine Appeal and the Tin Man will be an enduring legacy from this.

Made by craftsmen at Hargreaves’ Bury factory from high grade stainless steel, Tin Man will be totally maintenance free and will be a permanent feature of the hospital landscape. To prevent escape he has been bolted to a solid concrete base. For safety reasons access to the statue is restricted, but staff still expect that local football fans will be keen to recruit him as a supporter for one or other of the Liverpool teams. Details of hat and scarf size have not been revealed.

A crane was used to hoist the half tonne statue into position. Former Alder Hey patients Kyle and Cameron Dwyer, the sons of the Liverpool Ductshop manager, Andy Dwyer, supervised the installation and declared the job: “Boss – really wicked”. Commenting on the installation, director of Hargreaves Ductshops, Phil Johnson explained, “The project certainly captured the imagination of our people at Bury and we hope that it will put a smile on faces here and fire some young imaginations for many years.”

Notes to Editor

Alder Hey is the largest children’s hospital in Western Europe and treats around 200,000 children per year. These are drawn not just from Merseyside but from as far as Cumbria, Shropshire and the Isle of Man, with some patients coming from overseas for special treatment. The hospital is noted for its specialist cardiac, oncology and cranio-facial units.

Senior Hargreaves is part of Senior Engineering Plc. The company is one of the largest suppliers of ductwork for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) in the UK. The company also offer a tested range of insulated fire ventilation ductwork for the safe handling and discharge of products of combustion in fire emergencies. Their major contracts division has been involved with many prestige projects such as the GLA headquarters, Millennium Dome and Portcullis House to name just a few.

Liverpool is one of a national network of Ductshops providing a trade counter service to local HVAC ontractors, plumbing and electrical trades. The Ductshops stock ductwork, fans, dampers, grilles, tape, tools and hundreds of items required to complete an installation.
